Scotland is world-renowned for its diverse and rewarding fishing spots — and here in Central Scotland and North Lanarkshire, we’re spoiled for choice. As a lifelong angler with over 35 years of experience, I’m excited to share some of my favourite waters and tips with fellow enthusiasts.
Top Spots for Trout Fishing
- Lomond Hills Fishery (Fife): A beautifully maintained fishery in the heart of Fife offering excellent sport for rainbow trout. Accessible and family-friendly.
- Arran View Fishery (Moscow, Ayrshire): One of my recent visits — a scenic water with well-stocked, hard-fighting trout. Ideal for both fly and bait fishing.
- Lilly Loch (Caldercruix): A local favourite offering consistent action for rainbow trout, with plenty of space and a great community of regulars.
- Hillend Loch (Airdrie): A large open loch with great fly fishing opportunities and known for its quality trout stocks.
- Loch Earn: A stunning Highland location for wild brown trout, perfect for traditional fly fishing.
Fishing Methods
- Fly Fishing – Ideal for both stillwaters and lochs; often the most rewarding method for big trout.
- Spinning – Great for covering distance and targeting aggressive fish.
- Bait Fishing – Especially effective at well-stocked fisheries using PowerBait, worms, or maggots.
Fishing Seasons & Licenses
The Scottish trout season generally runs from March 15th to October 6th. Most fisheries operate year-round, especially stocked ones. Always check if a permit or day ticket is required — nearly all stillwaters and lochs listed above will provide them on-site or online.
